About David Rivas

David Rivas David was born in San Antonio, Texas but grew up in California. After a stint in the Marines which included a tour in Viet-Nam, Rivas attended design school at the LA Mart, however, his talent as an artist didn't appear until a color photography class at Ventura College gave him the tools to produce the imagery that is his art. Rivas photographs such mundane things as broken glass, oily waste water, or fragments of graffiti. However, Rivas feels that the subject matter in his dynamic photographs is not as important as the viewers interpretation of them. The distorted reflection of an orange traffic cone and a green garden hose becomes a vehicle of serendipity that takes your mind to a place you can only imagine. Rivas says My work isn't finished until the viewer makes a personal interpretation of what they see. David is a public artist whose art banners can be seen throughout the City of Ventura. His work has been published numerous times in art magazines as well as in corporate advertising. Rivas has work in several private collections as well as the permanent collection of the Carnegie Art Museum and the Museum of Fine Art Photography. His work was published in Emulsion Magazine as well a Art-Life Limited Editions witch is in The Getty Museum Archive. His photography was the subject on a documentary titled "Boilerman", featured on "Life and Times" on KCET Public Television in Los Angeles.
